Slovenia Supports Macedonia’s Road to the EU

Slovenian Member of European Parliament (MEP) and Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Rapporteur for Macedonia, Jelko Kacin said Wednesday before the EP Foreign Affairs Committee it is important that Macedonia’s EU accession talks start as soon as possible, along with determination of a date.

Brussels, January 24 (MIA) – Slovenian Member of European Parliament (MEP) and Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Rapporteur for Macedonia, Jelko Kacin said Wednesday before the EP Foreign Affairs Committee it is important that Macedonia’s EU accession talks start as soon as possible, along with determination of a date.

“I hope that Macedonian will soon become EU’s official language, under that name, not a different one as certain neighboring countries would like to use”, said Kacin, adding that latest Macedonia-Greece name talks have not resulted in a solution, but the statement of UN Envoy Matthew Nimetz on the constructiveness of negotiations is encouraging.

“I would like chairman of the Foreign Ministers’ Council, Dimitrij Rupel to be as enthusiastic towards Macedonia as he is for Serbia. Even more, I would like talks for annulment of visas for Serbian nationals to be preceded by such talks for Macedonian citizens”, stated Kacin, adding that the Macedonian Government has done a lot in this field, along with the introduction of biometric passports.

“I believe that Macedonia and its citizens deserve this”, said MEP Kacin in Brussels
