Macedonia To Lead Regional Development Organization

The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) congratulates Macedonia on assuming its one-year Presidency of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), a regional initiative launched in 1996 that aims to strengthen the security, regional stability and cooperation between the Southeast European countries.

“We are pleased to see Macedonia assuming a greater leadership role in the region.  Through its presidency of the SEECP, Macedonia reaffirms its strong commitment at maintaining stability of the region and promoting good neighborly relations,” stated UMD President Metodija A. Koloski.

Macedonia’s Foreign Minister, Nikola Poposki, announced that during its one-year presidency Macedonia would focus on increasing the economic cooperation between the SEECP-participating countries.

“A free-market economic system that actively trades with all of its neighbors is important to Macedonia’s long-term development, and it is also a key component to fostering better regional relations,” stated UMD Chairman Stojan Nikolov.  “As a forum where economic ties can be strengthened, we hope the SEECP will produce tangible results under Macedonian leadership over the coming year, and that the governments of all SEECP nations will put economic development at the top of the agenda.”

Nikolov added: “Unfortunately, when Macedonian ethnic minorities are still denied basic human rights in countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Albania, it is painfully obvious that much work remains to be done before the region enjoys more harmonious international relations.  Hopefully, the SEECP can help to address these important obstacles to cooperation in the coming year, as well.”
