Keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive in Macedonia

The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) and The Holocaust Fund of Macedonia have launched a strategic partnership and joint Holocaust Memory Initiative. The Initiative will aim to preserve the remembrance of the Holocaust in Macedonia and to promote the traditions and cultures of the Macedonian Jewish community. It will further strengthen the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination while promoting democracy, human rights, and tolerance among all Macedonians.

This announcement comes in light of the Fund’s opening of a permanent exhibition at the Holocaust Memorial Centre of Macedonia in Skopje in the fall of 2018 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the deportation of almost 98% of the Macedonian Jewish community to the death camp Treblinka.

Both institutions have been working together since 2006. UMD has hosted the representatives of the Holocaust Fund of Macedonia at our offices in Washington, D.C. on numerous occasions for panel discussions, roundtables, movie screenings, and networking events. UMD led a delegation to attend the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust of the Macedonian Jews and the grand opening of the Holocaust Memorial Centre in 2011. In 2013, the Holocaust Memorial Centre was a focal point during our 4th UMD Global Conference held in Skopje, where hundreds of our participants were able to visit the museum and learn more about the atrocities during WWII.

UMD encourages your support for the Holocaust Fund of Macedonia and welcomes donations from individuals, families, and companies/organizations. Please click HERE to make your tax-deductible donation. Your contributions will help the Holocaust Fund and the Museum to finalize its permanent exhibition, remain a guardian of human rights in the region, and embolden visitors to reflect upon the memories from the Holocaust in combating modern day anti-Semitism, nationalism, xenophobia and any form of discrimination.
