UMD Commemorates 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day

The United Macedonian Diaspora, (UMD), a leading organization promoting the interests and needs of Macedonians globally, calls for pause and reflection on the centenary of Armistice Day.

In commemorating the conclusion of one of the worst wars in modern European history, leaders from the UMD have called on a reflection of Macedonia’s experience in war, and in peace, over the last 100 years.

UMD calls for a greater and more studious consideration of the atrocities and devastation committed against Macedonia, particularly land grabs, occupation, displacement after the Balkans Wars and in the run-up to the First World War. It also calls for a greater understanding of Macedonia’s role in the war, the Macedonian Front, and the Balkans Campaign.

Metodija A. Koloski, President of the United Macedonian Diaspora, said:

“By happenstance the poppy is the national flower of Macedonia. We are fortunate that it symbolizes remembrance for all who died fighting for freedom, and gives thanks to all of our veterans today.

“There is no shame for all sides to come together and candidly discuss the war. This represents a remembrance of the past but it is meaningless if we do not work for peace today.

“We mourn and shall never forget, and call on modern-day leaders to apologize so that true reconciliation may begin. We owe it to our forefathers to continue fighting for equality, justice, and peace.”
