Founded in 2004, United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) is an international non-governmental organization addressing the interests and needs of Macedonians and Macedonian communities throughout the world.
The United Macedonian Diaspora is looking for unpaid interns to work as Country Scholars. Country Scholars will be required to research, write, and submit to the Board of Directors reports on their respective assignments.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Country Scholar is responsible for reporting on a range of issues based upon the requirements of their assignment. Such issues include, but are not limited to human rights, census statistics, macroeconomics, and international relations. Scholars will have approximately four months to research, compile, and complete their reports. Submitted reports will be used by UMD to help design strategy, as well as to inform the public and will be presented collectively at UMD’s Annual Global Conference, which will be held in Washington, D.C., from June 11-13, 2009. Scholars will work independently, but will be required to submit regular progress reports to the officers of UMD regarding their work. UMD will cover legitimate project expenditures.
Requirements:
*All applicants must have legal ability to work and/or study in their respective countries. The United Macedonian Diaspora will not sponsor work/study visas for this project.
* Excellent written and oral communications and presentation skills in English. Macedonian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Albanian, and Greek language fluency a plus, though not required.
*Working knowledge of Macedonian and Southeast European issues.
*Genuine interest in Southeast European affairs and minority rights.
*Ability to prepare and present complex projects and policy papers.
*Ability to work independently with consideration of strict deadlines.
*Good computer skills, including experience in working with Microsoft Office.
*Close attention to details and excellent organizational and communication skills.
Educational Requirements:
*Applicants to this position must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program, majoring in international affairs, political science, sociology, or a similar field. Only applicants in their third or fourth year of study will be considered.
*Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4.0 U.S. grading scale.
