UMD Board Meets with Ambassador Nimetz

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 4, 2009 – The Board of Directors of the United Macedonian Diaspora met with the United Nations Special Envoy Ambassador Matthew Nimetz on Monday, February 2, 2009 in New York City to discuss the ongoing ‘name dispute’ between the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Macedonia.

UMD reiterated its position that the Macedonian Diaspora objects to any changes to Macedonia’s name.  UMD expressed concern to Ambassador Nimetz over the Hellenic Republic’s continued efforts to remove the term Macedonian to describe the Macedonian people and language at the United Nations and the European Union.

UMD believes that a bilateral issue such as the ‘name dispute’ should not impede Macedonia’s NATO and European Union membership and Macedonia should be judged based on its merits and reforms.
