The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD), a leading voice for the half a million Macedonian Americans, proudly celebrates yesterday’s introduction of H. Res. 1522, supporting the designation of “Macedonian American Heritage Month”. This important resolution honors the rich language, history, and culture of Macedonian Americans, while highlighting their invaluable contributions to the United States. The text of the resolution can be found here.
UMD commends the leadership of Congressional Macedonian Caucus Co-Chairs: Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI), Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), and Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) for spearheading this initiative. Their dedication to recognizing the Macedonian American community is a testament to the vital role this community plays in enriching American society.
Recognizing Macedonian American Heritage Month is not only a celebration of our culture but also a significant step in raising awareness of the profound impact Macedonian Americans have had on the U.S. UMD deeply appreciates the bipartisan support and leadership shown by the Caucus Co-Chairs in introducing this resolution. Macedonian media have significantly reported about the resolution, giving hope to Macedonians in the homeland as well.
The introduction of H. Res. 1522 follows a similar resolution introduced in the Senate last year, aimed at designating September as Macedonian American Heritage Month. Earlier this month, UMD engaged with members of Congress during its annual advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, reinforcing the importance of this designation. Read more.
UMD has been a dedicated advocate for establishing Macedonian American Heritage Month since 2019, leading efforts to secure proclamations from governors and mayors across the United States. These efforts include advocacy within state legislatures, notably in Michigan, to further recognize the contributions of the Macedonian community.
UMD encourages all Macedonian Americans, all Macedonian cultural and religious organizations in the United States, and supporters to join in this vital mission by raising their voices on social media and contacting their Congressional representatives to co-sponsor the resolution. We can’t do it without you – your voice is essential in turning this vision into reality!
