UMD – 17 Years of Macedonian Action

Today, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) – founded on October 28, 2004 – celebrates its 17th anniversary.

Until UMD was founded, there was no permanent, professional, and persistent voice for Macedonians located in Washington, D.C. In May 2008, UMD became the first Macedonian organization to open an office in Washington, D.C.

As a non-partisan, non-profit, non-governmental organization, UMD has led efforts to educate policymakers worldwide, promoting the interests of Macedonians and Macedonian communities. UMD has never wavered in its commitment to building a stronger, more influential Macedonian diaspora community and a stable and territorially secure Macedonia.

Macedonians now have a seat at the table in places of power like Washington, D.C., Canberra, Ottawa, and Brussels, in significant measure, because of UMD’s hard work. Macedonians helped build the nations we now call home, and UMD will continue underscoring the role Macedonians play in society. Promoting our rich Macedonian cultural heritage is a cornerstone of UMD’s mission.

UMD takes pride in being committed to gender equality in the Macedonian community and leads by example by having an equal number of women and men on the UMD Board of Directors. In addition, UMD is a staunch advocate for Macedonian youth professional development through programs like the Bitove Scholarship, Birthright Macedonia, the D.C. internship program, Generation M, leadership conferences, and 40 under 40.

Lastly, UMD is a longtime proponent for human rights and religious freedom for Macedonians and other marginalized groups. The realization and protection of these rights in Albania, Bulgaria, and Greece is paramount in furthering the Macedonian identity.

UMD strives to achieve our vision of an influential, respected, and united Macedonian diaspora committed to building and sustaining the global Macedonian community. Macedonians are responsible for one another.
