Macedonian-Americans Congratulate President Obama

Washington, D.C. – January 21, 2008 – The United Macedonian Diaspora extended to President Barack Obama congratulations on his historic inauguration yesterday.

The full text of the letter from UMD follows:
Dear President Obama:
It is with great pleasure that we at the United Macedonian Diaspora congratulate you on your inspirational and historic inauguration as the 44th President of the United States of America.  The entire world has been captivated by your uplifting message of hope at this time of global uncertainty.

Macedonian-Americans hope that the great bond of friendship between the United States and the Republic of Macedonia will flourish during your presidency and that our nation will continue its staunch support for the Republic of Macedonia in its efforts to pursue a policy of integration into the Euro-Atlantic Community.

The Republic of Macedonia has surmounted enormous challenges since joining the community of nations in 1991.  Macedonia has implemented vital social and economic reforms and has been a devoted partner with the U.S. on a variety of U.S. policy initiatives, ranging from accepting large numbers of Kosovar refugees in 1999 to unstinting military support for the U.S.-led operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The United States acknowledged Macedonia’s commitment to these common goals and values, along with its development of an impressive and stable democracy in 2004, when it officially recognized the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name.

Macedonian-Americans are eager for leadership in the Euro-Atlantic Community that evaluates the candidacy of aspiring nations on merit.  UMD looks forward to the day when, under your leadership, the Republic of Macedonia is granted the membership in NATO that it richly deserves.

We join the rest of the nation in wishing you every success as our new President and we look forward to your initiatives to strengthen the U.S. role as peace-maker in Southeast Europe and honest broker in the ever deepening relationship between the United States of America and the Republic of Macedonia.
