Global Voice
United States
Founded in 2004 to amplify Macedonian -American voices in Washington, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) has evolved into a leading international, non-governmental organization. UMD is dedicated to promoting Macedonia globally, advocating for the needs of Macedonians worldwide, and fostering education and cultural exchange. As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, UMD operates from various locations across the United States and internationally.
UMD is a non-partisan organization committed to building lasting relationships with leaders on both sides of the political spectrum to advance Macedonian American interests. Representing the diverse Macedonian American community, UMD collaborates with faith leaders, politicians, and community members to spread Macedonian culture and address the challenges facing Macedonians both domestically and abroad.
UMD empowers the next generation through educational opportunities, raises global awareness of Macedonian culture, and champions Macedonian activism worldwide. Each year, UMD hosts the Old New Year’s Masquerade Charity Ball – Vasilica Celebration. The organization’s Birthright Macedonia program immerses young people of Macedonian descent in their heritage through cultural experiences in Macedonia. Additionally, UMD annually recognizes outstanding Macedonian individuals under 40 with its prestigious 40 Under 40 list.
UMD’s programs and initiatives aim to increase global awareness of Macedonians and their rich culture, while also connecting the Macedonian diaspora to their roots.
Australia
Macedonian-Australians have been instrumental in UMD’s success since its founding in 2004. Building on this strong foundation, UMD Australia seeks to engage the next generation of passionate volunteers.
Australia boasts one of the largest Macedonian populations outside Macedonia, with over 111,000 residents claiming Macedonian ancestry in the 2021 census. This vibrant community serves as a vital bridge between Australia and their ancestral homeland.
VOLUNTEER FOR UMD AUSTRALIA
UMD Australia is aware that a growing number of Macedonian-Australians of all ages and friends of the community are interested and available to advance Macedonian-Australian interests by supporting one or more UMD programs. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and contribute to the better development of our community, Australia, Macedonia, and the bilateral relations between both nations.
The benefits of volunteering include knowing that you can make a difference to the Macedonian-Australian community, inspire the next generation of Australian-Macedonians, and meet impactful members of our community.

Canada
Since the turn of the 20th century, Canada has become a major destination for Macedonian emigrants. Today, an estimated 250,000 Canadians claim Macedonian heritage. UMD’s Canadian Operations collaborate with established Macedonian faith-based, cultural, and benevolent organizations to represent their interests and needs. These organizations include the Macedonian Orthodox Churches, the Canadian Macedonian Heritage Society, the Canadian Macedonian Place, the Bitove Foundation, the United Macedonians Organization of Canada, and the Macedonian Film Festival.
To empower the Canadian-Macedonian community, UMD’s Canadian Operations and our young leaders program, Generation M, host a Canadian-Macedonian Leadership Conference at the University of Toronto. Social events include UMD’s professional networking events and the annual UMD Rockin’ Party at Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club.
In 2010, UMD held its 2nd Annual Global Conference in Toronto, attracting over 1,000 attendees from nearly 20 countries. The pillar of the Canadian-Macedonian community, the late John L. N. Bitove, C.M., received the first-ever UMD Lifetime Achievement Award at the closing gala.
Building strong relationships is a cornerstone of UMD’s work. In 2014, UMD co-hosted a Macedonian Tribute Ball with the Canadian Macedonian Place, honoring community leaders Vonna Bitove (UMD Macedonian Heritage Public Service Award) and Chris Paliare (UMD Lifetime Achievement Award).
UMD’s Canadian Operations maintain an open-door policy, fostering dialogue with Canadian government and non-governmental entities. This collaborative approach aims to better serve the community and strengthen Canada-Macedonia relations. Notably, in 2007, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada recognized Macedonia by its constitutional name thanks to community efforts coordinated by UMD Canada. Additionally, in 2010, UMD Canada led a delegation to present Prime Minister Harper with UMD’s highest honor, the UMD Goce Delchev Award.
