It has been a busy fall for the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) in large part thanks to the amazing help provided by Moustafa Tahoun and Stefanie Nikolov – our UMD International Policy and Diplomacy Fellows for the fall of 2024.
Since the inception of UMD’s internship program in 2008, over 130 students have gained invaluable experience in Washington, D.C., through our program. These students further explore their interests in Macedonia, Southeast Europe, U.S. Foreign Policy, human rights, and Trans-Atlantic relations.
Moustafa enthusiastically shared the following about his UMD internship opportunity, “UMD’s advocacy on Capitol Hill was a truly rewarding experience. I felt proud to help advocate for the rights of the Macedonian diaspora community and witness the impact of our collective efforts. True change starts with compassion and a commitment to understanding others. By advocating for those in need, we not only uplift our communities but also honor our shared humanity.”
Stefanie has been exposed to the UMD’s work her entire life and is excited to now be able to make an impact by advocating on behalf of Macedonia and our global Macedonian community. “I am very excited to be interning for UMD since this past summer! I look forward to working closely with my fellow Macedonians, UMD staff, contributors, and supporters, and continuing to gain knowledge about the social and political events currently taking place in our country, as well as honing my skills regarding properly advocating for what we believe in through the UMD,” she shared with UMD about her internship.
Gordan Jordanov, UMD Macedonia and Europe Director, stated, “It’s been a pleasure working with Moustafa and Stefanie. This program offers a unique opportunity for emerging leaders to explore the successes of the Macedonian diaspora and its impact around the world through hands-on experiences. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives have enhanced UMD’s mission and have contributed to the vibrant narrative of our community’s achievements.“
“Our interns’ contributions, such as creating social media posts, redesigning our newsletter, and compiling economic briefs, have significantly boosted productivity at UMD. They’ve also played a key role in advancing UMD’s Congressional advocacy efforts. This internship not only supports career growth but also deepens their passion for learning about the rich Macedonian culture,” said Emily Abramczyk, UMD Senior Global Policy and Advocacy Officer.
