UMD Congratulates Macedonian Prime Minister Gruevski and First Diaspora MPs

June 6, 2011 – Washington, D.C. – The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) joins millions of Macedonians throughout the world in congratulating Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski for successfully winning yesterday’s elections in Macedonia.  UMD congratulates Miki Dodevski (Australia), Risto Mancev (Europe), and Pavle Sazdov (North America) on being elected as the first members of Macedonia’s Parliament from the Diaspora.

“Macedonia has once again shown its maturity by holding peaceful and democratic elections.  Macedonian citizens have chosen who will lead Macedonia in the coming years, and the UMD will stand behind Macedonia and its leadership on its path to full Euro-Atlantic integration and prosperity,” said UMD Board Chairman Stojan Nikolov.

For the first time in the 20 year long history of Macedonia’s independence, Macedonian citizens abroad had the opportunity to vote in all Macedonian diplomatic and consular missions and elect their own representative to sit in Macedonia’s Parliament.

Since being founded in 2004, UMD has advocated for the Diaspora’s right to vote.

“Macedonia has made enormous strides in the last five years, under Prime Minister Gruevski’s leadership, to improve and strengthen relations with the Macedonian Diaspora regardless of generation,” said UMD President Metodija A. Koloski.  “With Mr. Dodevski, Mr. Mancev, and Mr. Sazdov in Macedonia’s Parliament, UMD is certain they will serve as a stronger bridge between Macedonia and its Diaspora.”

“This year marks Macedonia’s 20th Anniversary since independence, and from this day forward we must celebrate, unite, and work together to help Macedonia and its citizens and all Macedonians, wherever they may be, to build an even stronger and more prosperous Macedonia.  Macedonians are responsible for one another, and only through shared responsibility and accountability can we ensure that Macedonia’s brighter days are ahead of us” concluded Nikolov.
