UMD Congratulates Canadian Macedonian Historical Society on 20th Anniversary

December 8, 2011 – Toronto, Canada & Washington, D.C. – The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) congratulates the Canadian Macedonian Historical Society (CMHS) on their 20th Anniversary and wishes them many more years of success.

Established in 1991 by Peter Kondoff, who is now the President Emeritus, and a small group of dedicated volunteers, CMHS is a non-profit, charitable organization, incorporated under the Ontario Corporations Act, provides all Canadians, especially those of Macedonian descent, with a true perspective of Macedonian history and culture.

“CMHS has been at the forefront of documenting and promoting Macedonian history in Canada and throughout North America,” said UMD President Metodija A. Koloski.

One of the largest non-British settlers to arrive in Canada, over a century ago, came from Macedonia.  The majority of Macedonians who migrated to Canada arrived in the aftermath of the Ilinden Uprising of 1903 – a heroic but unsuccessful attempt by Macedonians to end Ottoman domination.  CMHS’s objective is to develop pride and awareness amongst our members and within the entire Canadian community as to who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.

“Macedonian immigration to Canada has helped shape Canada to what it is today; CMHS through its large network of academics and historians has been able to document our émigré story and today houses the largest Macedonian library in North America at the Canadian Macedonian Place in York, Ontario,” said UMD Director of Canadian Operations Jim Daikos.  “UMD expresses its utmost gratitude to CMHS and its many volunteers for preserving our heritage and leaving something behind for future generations.”
