Macedonia Chooses Manchevski’s “Shadows” for Oscars

The Macedonian filmmakers chose Milcho Manchevski’s new film, SHADOWS, to represent Macedonia in the 2008 Oscar race.  The committee picked SHADOWS today to be the Macedonian entry in the Foreign-Language category.

SHADOWS, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, tells the story of a young physician (played by Borce Nacev) who seems to have it all: a beautiful middle-class life, a supportive family, a wealthy mother…  After he suffers a near-fatal crash, things begin to change, as he starts encountering shadowy figures who ask something of him.  The film was photographed by Fabio Cianchetti (DREAMERS, BESIEGED, GO GO TALES) and edited by David Ray (SCARFACE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, A BRONX TALE).

Manchevski was representing Macedonia in the Oscar race once before, when his first film, BEFORE THE RAIN was nominated and made it in the five top Foreign-Language contenders. BEFORE THE RAIN won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1994 and the Independent Spirit Award as Best Foreign-Language film in 1996, making it the only widely acclaimed Macedonian film.
