The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) condemns the divisive statements of the leader of the DUI political party and long-time government coalition member, Ali Ahmeti.
During his visit to Ukraine, Ali Ahmeti told the Ukrainians: “You will win this war. Be strong and never give up, that’s how we won because we never gave up!”. With this statement, Ahmeti consciously wants to humiliate his fellow citizens Macedonians, presenting them as losers of the conflict in 2001 and himself as the winner.
Such statements are not appropriate for politicians who strive for inter-ethnic peace. If DUI and Ahmeti want to live in “one society for all,” they should distance themselves from statements that are offensive to Macedonians.
UMD calls on Ahmeti to apologize for this statement. We also invite the government and the relevant authorities to create a framework and standards of expression, particularly when it concerns Macedonia’s representation before important international organizations or countries.
