15th Macedonian Masquerade Held at Georgetown University

Over 100 guests celebrated the start of 2020 at the 15th Annual Macedonian Old New Year’s Masquerade Vasilica Charity Ball at Georgetown University’s Copley Formal Lounge on Saturday, January 18, 2020! Thank you to everyone who attended and supported UMD’s educational and charitable programs.

A special Galichnik Wedding Festival exhibit was displayed by Dejan Stankovski who gave brief remarks during the evening about what it meant to him photographing this day that has traditionally been going on for hundreds of years in the village of Galichnik, Macedonia. The exhibit is moving on to UMD’s office and photos are available for sale; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to UMD.

Guests enjoyed Macedonian food catered by D.C. popular food truck From Scratch, Macedonian wines donated by Stobi Winery and Balkan Wine Project being served by bartender Viktor while dancing to the latest hits and Macedonian ora with DJ Bobby. Brian Guy won the 50/50 draw and donated the prize back to UMD. Raffle prize winners were Haley Hogenkamp, Davia McCool, and Maja Stamenkovska.

The traditional Vasilica pogacha was broken by the guests, and the coin inside the bread was found by second-generation Macedonian-American Vida McCool. In Macedonian tradition, the person who finds the coin in the pogacha will have good luck in the new year.
