Macedonia, a unitary state within its existing borders, is distinct as being the only country in Southeast Europe to have fully demarcated borders with all of its neighbours post-1991. This demarcation, most-recently concluded with Kosovo, is imperative to respective law enforcement on both sides of the border in their fight against global terrorism, global illegal narcotics smuggling, and global illegal smuggling of humans who fall victims to international prostitution rings. Furthermore, environmental issues are becoming more important and there is a need of more regional cooperation, especially in terms of preservation of the third oldest lake in the world, Lake Ohrid, Lake Prespa, and Lake Dojran.
UMD urges the international community’s intervention and institutionalization of mechanisms necessary against those who might threaten the stability, the economic development, and democratic process in Macedonia and Southeast Europe. Peace in Macedonia, and along Macedonia’s borders, helps ensure lasting peace and stability in the wider region.
