“If I become president, the era of nation building will be brought to a very swift and decisive end… it’s time to chart a new course.”
– U.S. President Donald J. Trump, then Republican Party candidate, August 2016
Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-California) has once again embarrassed himself, his constituents, and his party, with deeply irresponsible attacks against the Republic of Macedonia. Members of Congress should not instigate conflicts in the Balkans, which may align with ethno-nationalist agendas supported by war-mongering politicians in the Balkans. Macedonia is a sovereign nation with intact international recognized demarcated borders with all its neighbors, and it does not belong to Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, Serbia, or any other nation-state.
UMD calls upon Albanian minority party leaders in Macedonia to denounce Congressman Rohrabacher's dangerous comments.
During an interview with Albania-based “TV Vision Plus,” Rohrabacher is quoted as saying: “I am sorry to say but (Macedonia) is not a state… Kosovars and Albanians in Macedonia should become part of Kosovo. The other part of Macedonia should become part of Bulgaria, or whatever country they allege to belong. The idea that we should keep Macedonia alive because someone 30 years ago decided this was the best reconfiguration that should come out of Yugoslavia’s disintegration, does not lead to a reasonable justification that this idea has to persist.”
UMD President Metodija A. Koloski stated: “For the current Chairman of the Subcommittee for Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats to openly call for the partition of a staunch U.S. ally is both ethically questionable and extremely dangerous. Macedonia is working hard to overcome the long-standing destabilizing effects of a violent 2001 invasion at the hands of Albanian paramilitary forces. Gradual progress toward stability in the region has always been predicated on international guarantees of the inviolability of the country’s borders. For a high-ranking Republican official to openly advocate for Macedonia’s destruction not only seriously undermines U.S. policy in Southeast Europe, but it also undermines U.S. President Donald J. Trump. The incoming President was elected on the promise of issuing in a new era of principled non-interventionism balanced with fighting radical Islamic terrorism, and respecting national sovereignty. Instead, Rohrabacher is essentially advocating that the terrorist designs of 2001 be fulfilled, and for a key U.S. ally in the region to be torn apart. This position is not only deeply unethical, but it is dramatically at odds with U.S. national interests.”
“We call House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to immediately relieve Rep. Rohrabacher from his chairmanship of this important Congressional Subcommittee, and we call on President Donald J. Trump to censure Rohrabacher for his inflammatory comments,” Koloski added. “We also call on Americans of Macedonian descent to contact their representatives and national leaders to demand that Rep. Rohrabacher is held to account.”
UMD Chairman Stojan Nikolov stated: “Macedonia was the only country to peacefully secede from the Yugoslav Federation without any bloodshed. The Balkan region has faced instability and divisions for many years. To suggest that further division is what is needed in the Balkans is absolutely absurd, but not at all out of character for Congressman Rohrabacher.”
In 2011, Rohrabacher famously cautioned the world against the so-called “dangers” of conducting a national census in Macedonia. The Congressman has long-standing connections to the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an Albanian paramilitary organization allegedly linked to war crimes, illegal human trafficking for the purposes of prostitution, the illegal trade in heroin and other narcotics, and the trafficking of human organs. The Albanian-American Civic League (AACL) - an influential American lobbyist for the KLA – famously had Rohrabacher as their “Guest of Honor” at a 2001 fundraiser. Rohrabacher openly called for the United States to arm the KLA, despite constant reports of KLA massacres against innocent civilians.
