The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) strongly denounces the recent statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, where he expresses regret for Serbia’s recognition of the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name.
UMD believes that such outbursts aimed at scoring cheap political points are undignified for a minister of a country, which aspires for European integration. Dacic’s clumsy rhetoric undermines the good-neighborly relations between Macedonia and Serbia. The most disconcerting part of Dacic’s statement is his twisting of modern history, as he portrays Macedonia and the other ex-Yugoslav republics as subordinate to Serbia. Dacic glorifies the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes from the interwar years where Macedonians and many other ethnicities were collectively discriminated and oppressed.
Moreover, UMD wants to take this opportunity to reaffirm its unwavering opposition to any meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign and independent Republic of Macedonia, especially at this sensitive time for our homeland. UMD is a strong advocate of excellent relations between Macedonia and its neighboring countries, but this does not mean that rhetoric, such as Dacic’s, or that of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama’s open interference in the formation of the new Macedonian government, should be tolerated.
UMD demands an urgent and unambiguous apology from Dacic, as well as a reassurance that Serbia will continue to use Macedonia’s constitutional and rightful name both in bilateral communication and in the international arena.
