Macedonia Corruption watchdog clears 1,257 cases Skopje, 12:45 The National Anti-Corruption Commission held its 200th session on Friday, claiming it had solved a total of 1,257 cases i.e. 62 percent of suspected corruption cases.
The Head of Anti-Corruption Commission, Mihajlo Manevski, called on competent authorities to assume a tangible rather than declarative responsibility in terms of implementation of legislation and more effective fight against corruption.
Manevski underscored that Macedonia needs to pass the democratic election test with no flaws, including the test on country's capacity to tackle corruption in politics i.e. funding of election campaigns.
He added that corruption watchdog has acquired a reputation and confidence, as it sought answers to a number of cases involving corrupt practices. It also brought up initiatives for prosecution of those involved.
"We have been always well understood and supported in the fight against corruption, even when we were referred to as a shadow government or a Commission reluctant to assume its duties," Manevski said.
He noted that the Commission has called for an inquiry into Kermes case, however, the case has not been resolved yet. Asked to comment Bacilo (pasture) case, Manevski said the Public Attorney Office and the Ministry of Defense has the jurisdiction over the case. The outcome of the inquiry, launched after the allegations that VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski is in possession of four apartments, is well underway, he added. /end/ Taken from MakFax. |
