ACTION ALERT 2

"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

UMD Commemorates 5th Anniversary of U.S. Recognition of Macedonia's Constitutional Name PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 November 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. - November 4, 2009 - The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) commemorates today the fifth anniversary of United States recognition of Macedonia's constitutional name.

"I will never forget November 4, 2004 - this was one of the proudest days for me as a Macedonian-American," stated UMD President Metodija A. Koloski. "The United States has been one of, if not the most important strategic ally to Macedonia on its path from a failed Communist state to a democratic country on its road to full Euro-Atlantic integration."  Macedonia is both a candidate for membership in NATO and the European Union.  UMD praises this support, and is thankful for the role the United States has played and continues to play in the region.

The United States joins 126 other countries that recognize the Republic of Macedonia's constitutional name.  UMD affirms unwavering and consistent support for retention of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia and rejects attempts to impose any name contrary to the Republic of Macedonia's constitution.

Founded in 2004, United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) is the leading international non-governmental organization addressing the interests and needs of Macedonians and Macedonian communities throughout the world.
