"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

 Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Editorial Committee of the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD), and everyone who contributed to this issue, I am pleased to announce the publication of Summer 2008 issue of UMD Voice (formerly UMD Quarterly).

This impressive publication is the culmination of months of effort by a group - primarily volunteers from the Macedonian diaspora - of designers, photographers, and writers working to pull the Macedonian community closer together. I hope that our readers share my sense of gratitude for their contributions.

Much has changed for the Macedonian community since UMD Quarterly first appeared in 2007: Dr. Srgjan Kerim of Macedonia assumed the presidency of the UN General Assembly; Australian legislators broke their silence and began debating the recognition of Macedonia's name; and Greek pressure snubbed Macedonia's entry to NATO at the summit in Bucharest.

We hope that the insight provided by this issue of UMD Voice will inform and mobilize the Macedonian community, and help create a more united Macedonian Diaspora.

Sincerely,

Alexander Krstevski
Editor, UMD Voice
