"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

Calling all Macedonian Heritage Speakers in the U.S. PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 June 2008

Please help us present the existence of heritage speakers of Macedonian in the U.S. and help us improve Macedonian heritage language instruction. (A heritage Macedonian language learner has been raised in a home where Macedonian language is spoken and who is able to communicate in English and in Macedonian.)

Elena Petroska is a visiting professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana: http://www.indiana.edu/~iuslavic/EPetroska_Page.shtml  She received a grant for research on heritage speakers of the Macedonian Language in the United States, funded by the ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies). She needs as many as possible young Macedonian-Americans (12 to 30 years old) who would fill out a questionnaire.  Please contact Elena on her email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and participate into this opportunity for presenting the Macedonian as a heritage language in the U.S.
