"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

SPAI - Macedonia has to create more efficient judiciary

Ohrid, 16:04

Macedonia has to create more efficient judiciary and conditions for quick clearance of the court proceedings, rightfully criticized by the public of being long stalled, said today the President of the Corruption Watchdog Dragan Malinovski.

He is among the participants of the 9th meeting of the Steering Group of the Regional Secretariat of Stability Pact Anti-Corruption Initiative (SPAI) that kicked off today in Ohrid.

According to Malinovski, the key impediment for judiciary's effective battle against the corruption lies in its organizational setup.

"The Courts are overcrowded with cases, which do not deserve to be proceeded", said Malinovski, adding that more attention should be placed at management and logistics of the courts, in order to complete these processes as soon as possible.

Justice Minister Meri Mladenovska-Georgievska reckons the independence of the judiciary poses as determining element in combating corruption, for the purposes of which Macedonia is undertaking legal system reform activities.

The two-day meeting of SPAI, which co-ordinates the anti-corruption committees of eight states, is aimed at reviewing the anti-corruption results achieved in the past two years, and outlining the activities in the next two-year period.

Except for the representatives of Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Moldavia and Romania, representatives of donor-countries USA, Norway, Italy, France and Switzerland also took part at the conference, as did the representatives of several international organizations and institutions. /end/
