"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

WASHINGTON, D.C. & CANBERRA - May 25, 2008 - The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) applauds the recent decision of the government of Macedonia to allow Australian citizens to travel to Macedonia without visas.

UMD had called for discontinuation of the visa requirement for Australian citizens, and is delighted that the government of Macedonia has made this decision.  This act of goodwill will further strengthen the relationship between Macedonia and Australia, significantly ease the free-flow of people and trade amongst them, and lead to greater cultural and educational ties and opportunities.  As Macedonia and Australia continue to deepen their strong friendship, UMD calls on Australia to recognise the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name.
