"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

UMD Commemorates 136th Birthday of Goce Delchev PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 04 February 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - February 4, 2008 - Today, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) observes the 136th anniversary of the birth of Macedonian national hero Goce Delchev, one of the fathers of the Macedonian national consciousness and of Macedonian independence.  Goce Delchev fought and gave his life for a free and independent Macedonia and preserved the spirit of the Macedonian people during Ottoman rule over Macedonia.

UMD asks Macedonians throughout the world to unite in celebrating Goce Delchev’s achievements today while remembering that Macedonians in Bulgaria and Greece continue to face the very same type of oppression that he fought against.  Also on this day, UMD calls on all Macedonians to continue supporting the Republic of Macedonia’s legal right to a constitutional name and its participation in international institutions and organizations under such name in accordance with Goce Delchev’s vision.

Please join UMD in commemorating Goce Delchev today and in celebrating the life, achievements and vision of this Macedonian hero.

Goce Delchev’s Biography can be read by clicking HERE.
