"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

WASHINGTON, D.C.  - The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) today released the following statement regarding Veterans Day.

Today, the United States honors Veterans living across the nation, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom, and the men and women serving the United States today so admirably at home and overseas.  UMD, on behalf of all Americans of Macedonian heritage, expresses its sincere gratitude to those who served and are serving the United States and honors all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the liberties and freedoms that all Americans enjoy.

UMD also calls upon all Macedonian-Americans to honor and remember our Macedonian-American Veterans on this day.  From the first days of Macedonian immigration to the United States to today, Macedonian-Americans have heeded the call to serve in both peace and war with many making the ultimate sacrifice.
