"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

Toronto, Canada - Greece continues to blacklist Canadian citizens of Macedonian ethnicity who are active in human rights organizations abroad or who are political refugees. The latest reported incident occurred on October 3, 2007, when Done Rakovski, a dual citizen of Canada and the Czech Republic, was denied entry because he "is a person for whom an alert has been issued for the purposes of refusing entry" and is "in the national register" (See the Greek border document here).

Gjorgi Plukovski, a Canadian citizen who has been denied entry into Greece on several occasions, said "Macedonians are repeatedly denied entry into Greece and have never been able to visit their birthplaces, even to attend funerals for family members.”

MHRMI has reported numerous cases over the last few years.

"As a Western country and self-proclaimed 'birthplace of democracy', Greece must explain to the government of Canada why its citizens are being discriminated against. Canada needs to make clear to Greece the consequences of its racist actions", said MHRMI president Bill Nicholov.
