ACTION ALERT

"The Greek government views the term "Macedonian" as a geographic term that describes all Greek citizens living in the Macedonian region in northern Greece. The government denies the assertions of the ethnic Macedonians in Greece that they are are a minority group; officials refer to them as "Slavophone Greeks" or "bilinguals." - Human Rights Watch

Tuesday, 09 May 2006
By Branko Ivanovski

Representatives of the Australian-Macedonian Chamber of Commerce, President, Peter Ristevski, and Vice President, Justin Naumovski, attended the Australian Federal Government’s annual Budget announcement for 2006/07 in Canberra on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.

For the first time in the history of the Australian budget was a Macedonian organization officially invited by the Australian Federal Government.

The representatives of the Australian-Macedonian Chamber of Commerce held constructive meetings with Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Honorable Alexander Downer, and Treasurer, The Honorable Peter Costello.  They also met with senior officials from both the Liberal and Labor parties.  Topics discussed were the recognition by Australia of Macedonia's constitutional name, increasing trade and co-operation between Australia and the Republic of Macedonia and the plight of Macedonian diaspora community in Australia.

AMCC in its short existence has managed to gain respect from Australian and global leaders and has become a strong advocate organization in representing the socio-economic needs of Macedonians and the Republic of Macedonia.
