UMD salutes the passage of the Senate Bill 494 and the House Resolution 987 that support the timely admission of the Republic of Macedonia to NATO. However, our organization is concerned that at the last minute amendment to the Senate bill was introduced to reference to the Republic of Macedonia as FYROM.  This type of verbiage is contradictory to the official policy of the United States when referencing the Republic of Macedonia.  It is of great importance that Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia join NATO in 2008 in order to secure and stabilize the Balkan region.

At the local elections in Albania, held on February 18, 2007, a Macedonian from the party Macedonian Alliance for European Integration (MAEI) was, for the first time, elected as mayor.  Edmond Temelko, a 36-year-old veterinarian turned politician won the mayoral position in Prespa municipality, making him the first Macedonian elected in Albania.

Milena Jovanova, originally from Negotino, Macedonia, went to Sudan as a volunteer last year.  Her only contact with the world was her satellite phone, for which she paid the bill herself.  A resilient humanitarian activist, Milena plans to go again on Doctors Without Borders mission, this time to Liberia...She spent half-a-year in rough living conditions, amongst people with leprosy, tuberculosis, and other contagious diseases.

Without any explanation, the press service of the Council of Europe removed the signs indicating the flag and name of the country from the seats of the three Macedonian journalists who are reporting from the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly. The signs indicated the flag and name of the country – Macedonia – the name of the journalist, and the name of the media.

In light of this week’s visit of the UN special envoy on the name dispute, Ambassador Matthew Nimetz, to Greece and Macedonia, UMD rejects any compromise over the historic, current, legal, and constitutionally binding name of the Republic of Macedonia.  The name Macedonia is and will remain the name of our ancestral identity and nationality, regardless of how many negotiations are undertaken; our name will not be changed.

OMO Ilinden PIRIN calls for end to discrimination of Macedonians in Bulgaria PDF Print E-mail

In the last couple of weeks on the territory of Republic of Bulgaria we witnessed unprecedented questioning and harassing of the members of one political party – OMO “Ilinden” – PIRIN. The police and other organs of the Interior Ministry are carrying out these actions by orders of the Sofia City Prosecutor – Il. Slavovska. All of the 6 000 members of the party were summoned to the police stations or the village halls or have been visited at their homes or have been taken with patrol cars from their workplaces.
