Name Recognition

Under the rule of international law, there is no precedent granting to any government the power or authority to dictate to an independent sovereign nation what the sovereign’s name is or should be.

The United Macedonian Diaspora hopes that the United Nations, the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and those nations who have not yet done so, will take the logical step of formally conveying full diplomatic recognition to Macedonia under her constitutional name, “Republic of Macedonia."

 During yesterday's Australian parliamentary session, Liberal Party MP for Cowen (WA), the Hon. Luke Simpkins, raised the issue of Australia's official policy toward the name of the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonians in Australia statting that in Australia there is no other example of any other community being racially vilified on their name, as there is in the case of the Macedonians.

 UMD had called for discontinuation of the visa requirement for Australian citizens, and is delighted that the government of Macedonia has made this decision.  This act of goodwill will further strengthen the relationship between Macedonia and Australia, significantly ease the free-flow of people and trade amongst them, and lead to greater cultural and educational ties and opportunities.  As Macedonia and Australia continue to deepen their strong friendship, UMD calls on Australia to recognise the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name.

Fried pictureRepresentatives from the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) met yesterday with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Daniel Fried, to discuss bilateral political and economic relations between the United States and the Republic of Macedonia, as well as Macedonia's continued progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration.  UMD thanked Ambassador Fried for his pivotal role in the United States' recognition of Macedonia's constitutional name and his indefatigable diplomatic efforts in connection with defusing the absurd "name dispute."

Greek officials recognized Macedonian language in 1915 PDF Print E-mail

An original document  from 1915 has been published to demonstrate that Greek officials took an oath on the bible that they would truthfully translate documents from the Macedonian to the Greek language. This document proves that the Macedonian language and identity existed prior to 1915 and that the Greeks acknowledged its existence in official legal documents.

NY Times Captures Macedonian Struggle for Freedom in 1900s PDF Print E-mail

The Macedonian Struggle for freedom from the  Ottoman Empire was captured by the New York Times through various articles published during the late 1890s and early 1900s.  The articles discuss topics such as the creation of the Komiti bands, the efforts to liberate Macedonia, the efforts to win independence similar to the Crete model at the time, the Ilinden Uprising efforts, among other topics.
